Image of an old Street of Sauveterre de Rouergue
I invite you to visit the beautiful village of Sauveterre de Rouergue. Historical it is a medieval village founded by Guillaume de Macon. It is a bastide (new town in the Middle Ages), representing the royal power. If the beginnings were difficult insofar as the local dignitaries slowed down the development of the bastide, Sauveterre took off until the 16th century.
Today Sauveterre de Rouergue is ranked among the most beautiful villages in France by the association bearing the same name. The summer is pleasant: the narrow streets keep the freshness; Winter is more difficult. Today there are few inhabitants in the village and the animation very reduced.
Medieval village in Aveyron
Sauveterre is located at about 500 meters of altitude to about thirty kilometers of the city of Rodez. Classified among the most beautiful villages in France, it is actually a bastide which means a new town. Its medieval aspect is still very present today with its old half-timbered houses and stone-built houses. The streets are narrow and the whole, built around the village square is structured in checkerboard.
Economically the village was specialized in cutlery. This practice gradually disappeared. Nevertheless, even today you will find a cutler who was also the best workman in France. I invite you to stroll through the old medieval streets and enjoy the few cafes on the central square.

The visit of the village of Sauveterre de Rouergue will be the opportunity to discover old traditional houses. Many houses are made of stones, but are also half-timbered or half-timbered. You will discover superb narrow streets, the whole being pedestrian. In the center of the village is a large square (large compared to the size of the village). Sauveterre is a bastide built in the Middle Ages in the 13th century.
I invite you to discover many more pictures of the most beautiful villages of France in Aveyron. With Sauveterre the best known is Najac, famous notably for its royal fortress which dominates the place. Similarly Cordes sur Ciel in the Tarn is a pure marvel.
Center of the village of Sauveterre
The old square of the village of Sauveterre de Rouergue is lined with houses of 2 or 3 floors. Large openings allow light to enter. It is a rectangular square surrounded by arcades. The vaults are low and fairly dark. A good way to protect yourself from the sun and heat in summer. It appears that the village developed around this square. The village church is more eccentric. Sauveterre is composed of houses essentially made of stones. The whole village is monumental compared to its size. It is a sign of its wealth and past power. Today, as in most villages in France, the rural exodus caused many inhabitants to lose their places. (© Photos by E. Buchot)
