Medieval village of the Ariège - Camon
Ariege has many traces of medieval history in France. The village of Camon is one of them. You will discover superb little streets and alleys lined with stone houses. Camon is a former fortified village surrounded by walls rebuilt in the 15th century. The abbey castle on the heights sheltered a Benedictine monastery. Along the streets of the roses are planted. During the flowering in May, the village is adorned with all colors.
Camon and Mirepoix - old traditional villages of France
The Ariège is a department founded in 1790. Like many departments of the south of France, the Ariège knew a tumultuous history. The Middle Ages saw the construction of bastides and large population movements. Geographically, the Ariège is undulating: a plain situated in the north is turned towards agriculture; The Pyrenean foothills are made up of 1000m high hills; The high country of the Aegean with its mountains.
In the heart of its landscapes, are superb villages like those of Seix, Saint Lizier, Tourtouze, Mirepoix or Camon. Some are classified among the most beautiful villages in France as the last dexu. The Ariège is a superb department to visit.
Church of Mirepoix - Cathedral of Saint Maurice
In the center of the village of Mirepoix, stands the magnificent Saint Maurice cathedral. The beginnings of the construction of the church date from the 13th century. The cathedral was definitively finished in the 19th century. The duration of the construction is explained by the cost of construction and the lack of money of the lords of the place. The bell tower was built in the 16th century. It measures 60 meters high and includes 16 bells.
Eugène Viollet-Le-Duc restored the church of Mirepoix in the 19th century. The vault was redone, the nave enlarged. The style was built according to the Gothic architecture of Languedoc. The whole appeared harmonious and just. You will be surprised by the dark side.
Visit of Mirepoix
Among all the villages of the Ariège, I invite you in particular to visit the village of Mirepoix. Originally it is a bastide. Mirepoix is built in checkerboard. In his heart was built the central square. It is made up of half-timbered houses, a covered hall and the cathedral Saint Maurice. Today there is also the town hall. To make the most of your visit I suggest you go to the tourist office. Numerous medieval animations are proposed in summer. (© Photos by E. Buchot)
