Image of a gondola under the Bridge of Sighs in Venice

The Bridge of Sighs or Ponte dei Sospiri is one of Venice's many bridges in Italy. It passes over the Rio de Palazzo o Canonica and connects the old prisons to interrogation cells of the Doge's Palace. It is one of the most famous tourist spots in the city. The name Bridge of Sighs suggests the sigh expressed by the prisoners led before the judges, at their last look at Venice. It was the last image of freedom for those who would end their days in prison. There are several bridges with the same name, including Cambridge and Oxford.© Photo of Emmanuel Buchot
