Wood for winter in the village of Sauveterre in Aveyron
When you visit the villages in the fall, you learn how the locals prepare for the arrival of winter. On several occasions I could see them being delivered in wood. If the inhabitants are usually supplied with wood in reasonable quantities, others simply block a street to regroup all the pieces. Even neighbors do not particularly like this way of doing things. Daily life is not always a long, quiet river.
If summer is probably the best time to visit the villages of southern France, autumn and spring remain pleasant seasons. Especially you will discover scenes of the daily life and the tourists are definitely less numerous.
Visit of Sauveterre de Rouergue
The village of Sauveterre de Rouergue is located in the Aveyron. This department bears the name of the river, the Aveyron, which crosses it. Note that this department is one of the most in France in terms of area. It is characterized, among other things, by many villages, most of which date back to the Middle Ages. It is a bastide country, that is to say, new towns.
Sauveterre de Rouergue, with Belcastel and Najac is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful villages of the department. If there is no medieval castle as in other villages, the whole is witness to the past. Today there is still not far from the central square of the village medieval gates, sign of the fortified side of the village.
Photo of Sauveterre de Rouergue - a historic bastide village
The historic villages of south-western France are unique. Many are bastides, ie new towns. Villages like that of Sauveterre were created in the 13th and 14th century. This is the period when Europe is experiencing a remarkable urban growth. The villages are built according to a plan which explains their sometimes geometric shape. They are based on political, economic and architectural power.
I invite you to walk in the narrow lanes of the bastide of Sauveterre de Rouergue. The streets are lined with stone and half-timbered houses. You will discover an old central square which was the place of life of the village.
Village Square of Sauveterre de Rouergue
The plan of the village of Sauveterre de Rouergue is composed of 8 islets divided by streets. The whole is built around the central square of the village. The small neighborhoods or islets are separated by streets and alleys. The structure of the village is checkered. The village of Sauveterre de Rouergue is a bastide of the 13th century. You will notice that the church is located on one end of the village. The superb place of Sauveterre is immense compared to the size of the village. In the center, a cross recalls the religious past of the places. Today, cafés and a bakery are the main shops of the bastide. In summer, this place is very pleasant and shady: arcades surround the square (© Photos by E. Buchot)
