Stockholm is the capital and the largest city in Sweden. It is the seat of the Swedish government and parliament as well as the official residence of King Charles XVI Gustave.
The city of Stockholm (Stockholms stad) or, more officially, Stockholm (Stockholms kommun) is, with its 962,154 inhabitants1, the most populated of the 290 Swedish municipalities. Greater Stockholm, which covers most of Stockholm County, has a population of 2,135,612 inhabitants1 covering an area of almost 6,500 km2.
Located on the Baltic Sea, the city is partly built on several islands, at the mouth of Lake Mälar, which earned it, like other European cities, the nickname "Venice of the North" - also given in Bruges (Belgium), St. Petersburg (Russia), and Amsterdam (Netherlands). © Photo of Emmanuel Buchot
