The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Budavár, Budavár Coronation Church is one of the main Catholic shrines of Budapest, located on Szentháromság tér in the 1st district. Officially placed under the patronage of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, it is rebuilt many times. It serves as a setting for the coronation ceremonies of several Hungarian kings and owes its popular name to one of them, Mátyás Hunyadi, said Mathias Corvin (1458-1490).
Transformed into a mosque during the Ottoman occupation, it suffered fighting for the liberation of Buda and has been rebuilt several times since then. It owes its present appearance to the architect Frigyes Schulek, who runs a deep restoration campaign between 1873 and 1896. © Photo of Emmanuel Buchot
