The heart of the city of Venice with its many small canals

The historic center is entirely pedestrian, the canals acting as road, and the various boats that cross only the Grand Canal, the Canal of Giudecca and the lagoon around the city, are the means of public transport. Venice is a unique city where one moves almost exclusively on foot. There are also water taxis - small motorized boats that can carry eight to ten people - and "gondolas" - small boats of very light oars; private transportation of Venetians by motorized or paddle boats is limited to Sunday excursions. Other models of larger or smaller boats are intended for commercial transport. Chateaubriand noted that Venice was "a city against nature". The Venetian from his point of view, esteem unique natural city "in a world against nature". © Photo of Emmanuel Buchot
