Bavaria (German: Bayern), officially known as the Free State of Bavaria (Freistaat Bayern), is located in southeastern Germany and is one of the sixteen German Länder. Its capital is Munich. It is named Boiaria, Bajuvaria or simply Bavaria in Latin, Bayern in German. These names come from the people of Bavarii or Baiuvarii (name also transcribed in "Bayouvares") who occupied it. The population is 12.6 million, or 16% of the German federal population (2nd out of 16), 1.2 million of whom are foreigners, or 10% of the Land's population.
Bavaria is bordered by Austria and Switzerland to the south, the Czech Republic to the east, the Free State of Saxony to the north-east, the Free State of Thuringia to the north of the Land from Hesse in the north-west of Baden-Württemberg to the west. It is the largest Land of Germany in terms of area and the second in terms of population (after North Rhine-Westphalia).
Its principal cities are Munich (München), Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Augsburg (Augsburg), Regensburg (Regensburg), Würzburg (Würzburg), Ingolstadt, Fürth, Erlangen and Landshut.© Photo of Emmanuel Buchot
