Palermo is located in western Sicily, on the north coast, at the edge of the Mediterranean Sea. The city stretches along the Conca d'Oro, "golden shell", plain formerly known for its citrus plantations. A small coastal river, the Oreto, crosses Palermo in its southern part. Overhanging the plain, several peaks encircle the city, such as Monte Pellegrino in the north, which rises to 606 m altitude. There are three nature reserves nearby, including Monte Pellegrino, which is adjacent to the north, and Capo Gallo, north of Mondello. © Imagens Emmanuel Buchot
