Symbol of French culture, known throughout the world for its beauty and elegance, home to many monuments, the city, nicknamed the City of Light, attracts in 2017 nearly 34 million visitors, making it one of the capitals most visited in the world. Paris also occupies, globally, a unique place in the sectors of luxury, fashion, high gastronomy, and in the world of culture. The French capital is twinned with only one other city, Rome, which is also valid in the other direction, with the slogan: "Only Paris is worthy of Rome, only Rome is worthy of Paris".
The city is, with its suburbs, the economic and commercial capital of France, as well as its first financial and stock market place. In 2019, it hosted the European Banking Authority. Paris is home to several international organizations such as UNESCO, OECD, ICC. The Paris region is one of the richest regions in Europe.
The density of its rail and motorway networks and its airport structures make it a focal point for national and international transport. This situation is the result of a long evolution, in particular of the centralizing conceptions of monarchies and republics, which give a considerable role to the capital in the country and tend to concentrate the institutions there. Since the 1960s, however, government policies have oscillated between deconcentration and decentralization. The city's macrocephaly is reflected in the convergence of most of the country's road and rail networks at its center and disproportionate demographic and economic disparities between the capital and the province: nearly 19% of the French population lives in the country. The Paris Saint-Germain football club and the French Stade rugby club are based in Paris. The Stade de France, an 80,000-seat enclosure built for the 1998 Football World Cup, is located north of the capital, in the neighboring town of Saint-Denis. Paris, which hosts the Roland Garros tennis Grand Slam tournament each year, organized the Olympic Games in 1900 and in 1924, and in 2024 became the second city with London to have hosted them three times. Paris also hosts many international competitions and every year the arrival of the Tour de France. © Pictures of Emmanuel Buchot
