First enclosure of Cordes sur Ciel
During the construction of Cordes sur Ciel in 1222, two enclosures were built. The first is that which surrounds the main square and its superb Gothic houses. The medieval gate is beautiful. Unlike the third enclosure, it bears old houses. Through these enclosures and narrow gates, the village was well protected, especially at the end of the Albigensian crusades. The street that starts from the medieval gate is at first narrow and then, gradually, it widens and you go along large facades of Gothic houses. Finally, you arrive on the superb medieval square.
Gothic facade of a house in Cordes sur Ciel
On the main square of the village of Cordes sur Ciel, you will discover houses unique in France. If at the bottom of the village these are traditional houses made of stones mostly 2 storeys, on the square of the village, you will see houses with Gothic facades. They are particularly refined and finely sculpted. The most famous houses are the Maison du Grand Fauconnier, the Maison du Grand Veneur or the Grand Ecuyer's house. Like the Gothic churches, the Gothic facades possess statues like gargoyles, but also representations of mythical animals like dragon and disturbing characters. The old place of Cordes sur Ciel regroups in a restricted place all this Gothic art. I invite you to admire it on the covered hall. A very pleasant time.
Market in Cordes sur Ciel
This superb hall of Cordes is in the heart of the village on the high point. It is the crossroads of all the streets that converge towards the top of the village. Originally, this square was used for markets. It was covered in 1276. To get there you have to climb a few steps. You then discover 24 stone pillars. The whole is very simple and sober, which contrasts with the rest of the place. The framework of the hall is made of wood.
In the center of the hall a well has been installed.Note that it has a depth of 114 meters. It was pierced inside the rock and stones were installed at the bottom. If craftsmen originally made leather and textiles, this square is now largely occupied by cafes and restaurants. It is a way of posing and imagining the noises and the animation that could be in the Middle Ages.
Alley of Cordes sur Ciel
In the historic center of Cordes sur Ciel you will see both wide streets, notably at the main square and the market, but also narrow streets lined with stone walls. The openings are small and small. In fact, these are dwellings and the back of the craftsmen's workshops. Through the photos you have just seen, you understand that it takes time to visit this village and enjoy it. Benches have been set up on the perimeters and give you the opportunity to admire the surrounding countryside. Enjoy your visit to Cordes. (© Photos by E. Buchot)
