Photo of Cordes sur Ciel
Among the many villages of the Tarn, Cordes-sur-Ciel is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful to visit. Located on the heights of a valley, Cordes is built in height. The oldest part is located on the high point. The picture below was made at the level of the church. The paved lane you see is one of the village entrances. It is narrow and the prospect towards the main square is superb.
Visit of Cordes sur Ciel in the Tarn
The Tarn, located in the south west of France has superb medieval villages. Many are classified among the most beautiful villages in France. You can discover Puycelsi, Rabastens, Castelnau de Montmiral. The Tarn was a department strongly affected by the Albigensian crusades. These bastides, built in the 13th century often have a defensive role. They are built in height and fortified enclosures protect the inhabitants from external attacks. Many villages possessed fortified castles with a dungeon and moat.
Cordes sur Ciel in the Tarn is part of these fortified country houses. Historians believe that there was a medieval castle. Cordes alternate between traditional medieval houses made of stones and half-timberings, and houses with Gothic facades found on the main square of the village: picture below.
Picture of an old houses of the Tarn
In the villages of the Tarn, you will see superb half-timbered houses perfectly preserved. They testify to the architectural richness of the French villages. In Cordes Sur Ciel, you have a unique and very successful mix: houses with Gothic architecture very finely carved with large openings and houses much smaller with narrow openings without particular decorations.
The picture below was taken at the exit of the historical center of Cordes. The narrow streets follow narrow streets. Medieval doors allow to leave the village. They are framed by half-timbered houses. You feel the weight of the story.
Visit Cordes sur Ciel
Through this photo of the street that gives access to the historic center of Cordes, I invite you to visit the beautiful village of Cordes. I really had a weakness for this village. It must nevertheless be imagined that at the beginning of the 19th century there were nearly 3,000 inhabitants which is enormous for the places. Difficult living conditions, a sometimes cold climate in winter and very hot in summer. It took the exodus rual as everywhere in France to see the population diminished. It is now about 900 souls. The village lives today thanks to tourism. You will be surprised by the numerous cafes and restaurants, but also by the craftsmen. Enjoy your trip to Cordes. (© Photos by E. Buchot)
