Photographs of Ireland: the peninsula of Dingle, Dublin city, the Irish capital. Travel to Ireland.
Ireland is a western European country occupying most of the island of Ireland in the North Atlantic Ocean. It occupies 26 of the 32 traditional counties, the other six forming Northern Ireland, one of the four constituent nations of the United Kingdom.
Ireland is a parliamentary republic whose two official languages are Irish and English. His national anthem is Amhrán na bhFiann and his flag consists of three vertical green, white and orange bands. The country's capital is Dublin (in Ireland: Baile Átha Cliath) and its currency is the euro. Ireland has been a member of the European Union since 1973. In order to differentiate it from Ireland, it is sometimes called the Republic of Ireland (in Irish Poblacht na héireann and in English Republic of Ireland) but it is not is not his official name (the 1949 Republic of Ireland Act makes it his "official description").
The country covers an area of 70,273 km2, and its population in 2017 is 5,011,102 inhabitants. The largest city is the capital Dublin, the other major cities being Cork, Limerick and Galway. Ireland claims its Celtic identity, so that, culturally, it usually represents the island of Ireland considered as one of the six "Celtic nations". The official symbol of the country is the Celtic harp (which appears on the euro coins), but the Irish clover is often used as another symbol, especially by the Irish rugby team. © Pictures of Emmanuel Buchot
