Bangkok is the capital of Thailand. It is both a city and a province. The city occupies an area of 1,569 km2 in the Chao Phraya River Delta in central Thailand and has a population of more than 9 million, more than 19 million people live in the metropolitan area of the capital, which is many times higher than than all other urban centers in the country.

Bangkok's roots can be traced back to a small trading post created in the fifteenth-century Ayutthaya Kingdom, which became important before becoming the site of the first capital, Thonburi, in 1768.
