Kyoto is a Japanese city in the Kansai region of central Honshu. It was from 794 to 1868 the imperial capital of Japan, under the name of Heian-kyō ("Capital of Peace and Tranquility"). It is today, with its imperial palaces, its thousands of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, the cultural and religious heart of the country. The city is also the capital of Kyoto Prefecture as well as one of the major cities of the metropolitan area Keihanshin (Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto). Its population is 1.47 million (2015 estimates).
Located in the center of the western part of Honshū Island, in the Kansai region, the city is surrounded by mountains, with Lake Biwa to the east. Only the mountains to the north are part of its administrative division, including the Atago, Sajikiga-take (桟 敷 ヶ 岳?) And Hiei mountains. Three major rivers flow through the city: Uji-gawa serving Osaka as Yodo-gawa, Kamo-gawa and Katsura-gawa.
The climate of the city is humid subtropical type. In winter the temperatures are relatively mild, but with frequent episodes of damp cold that amplify the feeling of freshness (it snows every year in Kyoto). Summers are sweaty and hot, even hot, the nights are particularly stifling. Because of the topography, the city is surrounded by mountains, it is common in Japan to describe the climate of Kyoto as extreme: heat hard to tolerate in summer and cold biting in winter. © Pictures of Emmanuel Buchot
