Photos of Vienna theater - art and culture of the Austrian people

The Burgtheater is a Vienna theater inaugurated in 1888. Considered one of the most important scenes in Europe, it is, after the Comédie-Française, the second oldest European theater and the largest Germanic theater. The building stands on the Ring, the circular boulevard of the Austrian capital. The building, built on the Ringstrasse by the architects Karl von Hasenauer and Gottfried Semper, combines neorenaissance and neo-baroque elements. By replacing the theater of the court founded in 1741 under Maria Theresa on Michaelerplatz, it became one of the most important theaters in Europe. At the end of the last war, a bomb ravaged the main building, sparing only the wings of the stairs of honor. The restoration took ten years but was so successful that in 1955, at the reopening, it was difficult to recognize the new parts of those of time. © Photo of Emmanuel Buchot
