Located in the north of the country, on the banks of the Red River Delta (Sông Hồng), its population is estimated at about seven million inhabitants in 2013, including 2.6 million in the central city. It is thus the second most populous city in Vietnam, after Ho Chi Minh City, located 1,760 km to the south. Its urban landscape is marked by the presence of numerous lakes (Hoan Kiem, West Lake, White Bamboo) as well as many religious buildings, mainly Confucian and Taoist (Temple of Literature, Ngoc Son temple) but also Catholic (cathedral St. Joseph, Church of the Martyrs). The old city also has a large number of Buddhist pagodas.
Hanoi was founded by King Ly Thai To in 1010, and remained until 1802 the political heart of Vietnam. The city was overshadowed by Huế, the imperial capital of the country during the Nguyễn dynasty (1802-1945), but became the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. It was then the capital of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, until in 1976, and became the Socialist Republic of Vietnam after the victory of the North during the Vietnam War. In October 2008, the city of Hanoi absorbs the province of Hà Tây and rural areas, doubling its population. In October 2010, festivities (The Millennium of Hanoi) commemorate the founding of the city.
Throughout the twentieth century, the city experienced a population explosion and strong economic development that made it an emerging metropolis. Many skyscrapers have been built here, including the Keangnam tower, and a subway is scheduled to start operating in 2017. It is also home to the country's major museums, including the National Museum of Vietnamese History and Museum of Fine Arts of Vietnam. © Pictures of Emmanuel Buchot
