Campaigns of France - Tarn and Cordes
The countryside of the Tarn are magnificent. Hilly landscapes and villages perched on the heights such as Cordes sur Ciel. If today Cordes counts to 950 inhabitants there were nearly 3000 souls in these places. The architectural richness of the village and the beauty of the houses testify to the power of the village. You will discover old cobbled streets, rich vegetation. Unlike the other small villages of the Tarn, Cordes have many shops.
The French countryside and their villages
In the pictures below you can see pictures of French villages and countryside. For many centuries, France, like the majority of European countries, was rural. Villages frequently had more than 2,000 inhabitants. The cities were underdeveloped and the economic activities were directed towards agriculture and livestock. With the industrial revolution, the villages gradually lost their inhabitants. The rural exodus began. Cities are growing faster and faster.
Today, the deep countryside of France is deserted. When you walk through the old villages you discover houses with closed shutters and sell. The shops closed one after the other. I invite you to discover the many traces of this history.
The Ariège is a particularly rual and mountainous department. You will not find large agglomerations or cities. The population of the department is very varied in time: in the middle of the 19th century, the Ariège counted nearly 270 000 inhabitants. Today there are barely 153,000 inhabitants. The countryside is magnificent and the villages testify to the tumultuous history of the place.
Camon is a small fortified village whose enclosures date from the 15th. The village experienced major destruction following floods. The whole was rebuilt and what we see today is splendid.
Countryside of Aveyron
The villages and countryside of the Aveyron are magnificent. You will discover small unique villages like Najac or Belcastel (picture below). The landscape is undulating and the valleys are enclosed as at Belcastel. The village is built on the slopes of the hill. Old medieval bridges span rivers. In summer, the shores are places of leisure and relaxation. I invite you to look at the many other photos devoted to the most beautiful villages in the south west of France. A unique and rich heritage. (© Photos by E. Buchot)
