River of the Aveyron in Belcastel - The bridge of the 15th century
Belcastel is crossed by the beautiful river of Aveyron. A very old stone bridge that dates from the 15th century and consists of 4 arches spans the stream. You will see a stone cross, which is very rare. Most restoration works took place in 1985. It took more than 15 years for the village to recover its charm of yesteryear.
In summer, the village is superb. It is surrounded by large forests composed of hardwoods. Contrasts are daunting. I invite you to walk on the bridge of Belcastel: you will have a very nice view on the village and the surrounding nature.
Visit the old medieval village of Belcastel
Not far from the village of Sauveterre de Rouergue, lies the beautiful village of Belcastel. It is located in Aveyron and is lost in the countryside. This village is classified among the most beautiful villages of France. Belcastel is located at the foot of the Aveyron. It is dominated by a very old medieval castle which dominates the village. Besides, when you look at the structure of Belcastel, you see that it developed on the flanks of the mountain, at the foot of the castle. The village was heavily derailed by time and a major restoration work was undertaken to restore its former glory.
I suggest in the pictures that follow to go to the visit of Belcastel, its old traditional houses, its very narrow streets. Good visit.
Entrance to the village of Belcastel
To reach the village of Belcastel, you take a small winding road and quite narrow. All the places are pedestrian. Little by little, the village presents itself to you, first of old stone houses, then you see the medieval castle with its dungeon located on the heights. The view is superb. Restaurants will allow you to stop off. They are very pleasant and will allow you to enjoy the places along the Aveyron.
Stone cross on the Belcastel bridge
It is very rare to see stone cruises on decks. Belcastel dates from the 15th century. It represents the weight and omnipresence of the church on the village. It is also a way to put away the whims of time and protect the village from the bad weather that can befall the region. I invite you to discover other photos devoted to the villages of Aveyron and Belcastel. Frankly, it's a feast for the eyes. (© Photos by E. Buchot)
