Medieval enclosure of Camon
To enter the village of Camon, you must pass under a splendid medieval massive door. It dates from the 16th century, when the fortifications were rebuilt after the destruction of the 13th century. It was not until 1570 that the whole was finished. We owe it to Cardinal Georges d'Armagnac. Originally the whole of the village was fortified and the abbey-chateau was on the heights of the village which made it possible better to guard against the attacks.
Medieval history of the village of Camon
The village of Camon is particularly old. Historians find traces at the time of Charlemagne in 778. In the 8th century, a first monastery was built on the premises. Although it was of modest size at the beginning, it gained importance over the centuries. In the 10th century, a new fortified abbey was built. The wars and violence in the Middle Ages led the lords of the place to build in the 12th century, an enclosure around the village of Camon. We still see today the traces with a magnificent door.
In the 13th century, the village experienced massive destruction. Indeed, the dam Puivert built upstream of the river which crosses Camon was destroyed and inundated the valley.
Medieval house of Camon
The village of Camon still retains important traces of medieval and 16th century. During your walks in the village, you will see old stone houses and wooden doors. If the whole village is restored, you can still see old walls decrepit and buildings very old. This gives the village a charming charm.
The best time to enjoy the village of Camon remains the spring and the month of May. The inhabitants all planted climbing roses in front of the houses. During the flowering, the village is beautiful.
History of Camon in Ariège
The department of Ariège has a very rich history and the village of Camon is the witness. To see the traces of the fortified enclosure, it is necessary to return to the village by the main door. At the back you will see a beautiful half-timbered house with small windows. It served as an obligatory checkpoint and control for all those who wanted to enter the village. I wish you a nice visit of Camon. You will find information at the tourist office of Camon located on the main street. Attention, it is open in the afternoons. It will allow you to visit, among others, the chateau-abbey and the church of the village. (© Photos by E. Buchot)
