Photo of Gros Horloge - Rouen
At the beginning of the rue du Gros Horloge is the historical monument of Gros Horloge. It is an astronomical clock attached to a belfry. The clock dates from the 14th century. Its dial is 2.5 meters. At the end of the single needle is a lamb. The clock mechanism, one of the oldest in France, was laid in 1389. The belfry dates from the 14th and 15th century. The Gros Horloge is with the cathedral the emblem of the city of Rouen.
Historic district of Gros Horloge - the old town of Rouen
At the end of the rue du Gros Horloge is the emblem of the city of Rouen: the Gros Horloge and the belfry. It is a pedestrian street and a small square that dates from the 13th century. This historical monument is made up of a beautiful astronomical colored clock composed of a single needle surmounted by a lamb. Today in the belfry there is a museum. Along the street you will find beautiful half-timbered houses.
Traditional Rouen Street
I invite you to discover the superb historic center of the city of Rouen. It is bounded in the East by the abbey Saint Ouen and in the West at the place Jeanne d'Arc. In its center is the most famous district: the big clock. Its pedestrian street is beautiful. You will discover superb small half-timbered buildings. The whole has been restored. At the end of the street stands the cathedral of Rouen.
Picture of an old store in Rouen
In the historical district of the city of Rouen beyond the beautiful half-timbered houses, beautiful churches, you will discover very old storefronts. Forgotten trades, and a past way of life. Rouen is a city full of history where the weight of history is visible everywhere. I invite you to stroll through the old narrow and pedestrian alleys. (© Photos by E. Buchot)
