Photos of the medieval castle in the hills above the city of Nuremberg

The imperial castle Nuremberg (Kaiserburg), built in the eleventh century, is one of the most important fortresses in Germany. For five centuries, emperors and kings have stayed there. The castle stands on a sandstone rock north of the city. The former castle of Burgraves, almost completely destroyed in 1420, was completed in the eleventh century by the Kaiserburg, whose current appearance dates back to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. From the outer courtyard and keep, 30 m high, we have an exceptional view of the steep roofs and towers of the old town. In the nearby courtyard, a deep well was dug out of the rock up to 50 meters deep. The double imperial Romanesque chapel of Kaiserburg has a gallery from which the emperor could see his assembled suite.© Photo of Emmanuel Buchot
