Venice is a port city in northeastern Italy, on the shores of the Adriatic Sea. It extends over a set of 121 small islands separated by a network of canals and connected by 435 bridges. Located off the Venetian Lagoon, between the estuaries of the Po and Piave, Venice is renowned for its peculiarity, as well as for its architecture and cultural heritage - it and its lagoon are listed as UNESCO World Heritage.
Venice is the capital of the region of Veneto. In 2012, the municipality has 269,810 inhabitants, including 58,666 intramural (Centro storico). 176 000 residents on the banks (Terraferma), mostly in the frazioni of Mestre and Marghera, and the remaining 31 000 inhabitants reside in other islands of the lagoon. With Padua and Treviso, Venice is the metropolitan area Padova-Treviso-Venice (PATREVE), a statistical entity of 1,600,000 inhabitants.
Its name comes from the people who inhabited the area before the tenth century, the Veneti. Called Venetiae in Latin, it is sometimes nicknamed the "City of the Doges", the "Serenissima", the "Queen of the Adriatic", the "City of Waters", the "City of Masks", the "City of Bridges" or the "floating city". The city is now famous for its canals - including the Grand Canal - and its gondolas, its many churches, St. Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, its Biennale and its carnival. © Imagens Emmanuel Buchot
