Image of Dusseldorf, the capital of the Rhineland in southern Germany

Erected in the city in 1288, Düsseldorf was for a long time the capital of the Duchy of Juliers-et-Berg; with this one, the city passed under the domination of the Palatine Counts which by inheritance became in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Palatine Voters and Electors of Bavaria. Bombed by the French in 1795 who razed the fortifications, turned into parks and avenues, the city became the capital of the Grand Duchy of Berg, which had Murat and Napoleon Bonaparte as sovereigns. It was restored to Bavaria by the Treaty of Lunéville in 1801, it passed with the Grand Duchy of Berg to Prussia in 1815. © Photo of Emmanuel Buchot
